How to Choose and Maintain Carpet

As an essential part of good interior design, the carpet requires more attention and care to be present in it for a long time and to look nice. We should not be careless about our rugs and carpets at home, and we should think twice when we buy them. It is true that they can be changed more often, but the correctly chosen carpet contributes to the completeness of the home’s overall design as it can sometimes fill the space more successfully than a piece of furniture.

The opposite case –a furnished room with a bare floor is almost unthinkable except in entrances or dining rooms. How should we choose a carpet so that we won’t regret it later because cheap things always turn out more expensive in the end? How to maintain carpets? In order to get an answer to these questions, spare some time to read the following article.

Natural Fibre or Synthetic Fibre Carpet?

Wool carpet has been an undisputed leader in the chart since ancient times now – only this kind of carpet can look good even in ten or fifteen years, and if it is well enough maintained it could be used for a century. Wool is the most appropriate material because of its tested qualities – natural fibre which does not hold static electricity, and when it is 2cm thick, it is a total thermal isolator. Besides, wool also contains the natural oil lanoline, which keeps dust on the surface and it is more easily cleaned up.

Wool carpets have the longest fibres, which makes it strong and durable for all kinds of treatment. The colours of wool carpets are most resistant to sunlight and washing. Silk, for example, fades much faster when exposed to sunlight and cotton – when washed many times.

Of course, other natural materials, such as silk, cotton, hemp, etc., are not to be underestimated as well because they have become more often used these days. But silk is too expensive and appropriate only for places with constantly high temperatures.

Hemp carpets are also natural and ecological but much more difficult to maintain. They are meant for a specific interior connected with the trendy Eastern style. Wool carpets should not be washed with detergents containing bleaching substances, as in most contemporary washing detergents. The most appropriate ones are the special detergents for wool. Such carpets should be washed in cool water.
